Rural Dialogue Namibia (RDN) has donated food and clothing to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans-diverse and queer (LGBTQ+) community and residents of Donkerhoek informal settlement.
The organisation, according to local media, also provided masks, sanitisers and condoms, which were donated by Positive Vibes and Rights of All Men (RAM).
‘We are excluded from mainstream charity drives and government initiatives targetting vulnerable communities. We are vulnerable, too’, RDN’s spokesperson, La-D !Aebes, said.
She also said that it was difficult for her community members to find employment.
!Aebes urged the members of the community to look after themselves and avoid contracting Covid-19.
The RDN was established in 2016 as a platform for the rural LGBTQ+ community and traditional leaders to engage over human rights issues.
Namibia had received a donation of personal protective equipment from the European Union and Finland to support its fight against Covid-19.
The country’s Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation had submitted an official request for support to the EU Civil Protection Mechanism as the country battles to reduce the number of Covid-19 cases.
Based on the emergency assistance requested by the Namibian authorities from the EU member states, Finland donated 2.36 million masks, 200,000 protective visors, 30,000 medical gowns, 100,000 syringes and 189,000 swabs.
