Mozambique: IOM Strengthens Cholera Response

Mozambique Cholera

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has facilitated a training programme in Mozambique’s Moatize District to strengthen the community event-based surveillance system.

Development Diaries reports that Mozambique is currently dealing with a long-lasting cholera outbreak.

Data from the World Health Organisation (WHO) shows that as of 15 October, 2023, 34,943 cases and 146 deaths were reported.

In addition, acute watery diarrhoea has been observed in 17 of the impacted districts; and the WHO has warned that this scenario is expected to get worse in the upcoming months due to flooding and the current state of poor sanitation.

There are active cholera outbreaks being reported in the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Nampula, and Tete, and seven districts.

In a post on its X handle, IOM said that its intervention has impacted thousands and cases have been swiftly addressed in curbing the outbreak.

The situation in Mozambique underscores the urgent need for coordinated national and international efforts to address the root causes of the outbreak and prevent future occurrences.
