World Vision Malawi has vowed to ensure girls in the country have access to quality education and protected from forced marriages and sexual abuses.
The organisation made the vow during an event to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child at Mitondo Primary School, Chitekwere, Lilongwe District.
‘The problem that we have is that children are facing a lot of abuses before the age of 18 and as world vision’, Director of Programmes at the World Vision, Charles Chimombo, said.
‘We are working with the government to help and support the well-being of the children, and one way to do that is to protect them from various abuses including early pregnancies and early marriages.
‘In our strategy, we have put up advocacy and child protection as one of our strategic focus in all the areas that we work.
‘As such, we are working with various stakeholders, including chiefs, parents, and ambassadors, to help and rally all Malawians behind girls.
First Lady Monica Chakwera said the fight against girl-child abuse needed collective efforts.
‘Every time I think about the welfare of a girl children, I will make sure that girls in the country are safe and they are accessing quality education while chasing their dreams’, she said.
‘We need to come together and make sure we protect them by all means’.
