WaterAid Malawi has equipped rural health facilities in the country with water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities.
Development Diaries reports that the humanitarian organisation provided the support through its 150 health care facility challenge project, with 11 out of 17 health care facilities receiving support so far.
It is understood that people in the community are now equipped with management and maintenance skills in various technical aspects. Among them are the medical facilities in Mndinda and Nthondo, which provide maternity services and outpatient treatment.
Malawi, like many other developing countries, faces significant challenges in matters related to WASH. These challenges pose obstacles to the country’s efforts to ensure access to clean water, adequate sanitation facilities, and proper hygiene practices for its population.
Data from WaterAid shows that one in three people in Malawi do not have clean water, 73 percent of health care facilities do not have access to a sanitation facility, and 9.6 million people do not have a decent toilet.
According to the Programmes Officer at WaterAid Malawi, Laston Zungu, WaterAid Malawi is committed to reaching out to 75 health care facilities with support from other partners.
