Malawi: OAF Donates Soap to Health Facilities

The One Acre Fund (OAF) has donated over 430 cartons of soap to health facilities in Blantyre, Chiradzulu, Zomba and Mulanje districts as one way of helping to control the spread of Covid-19 in Malawi.

While donating 106 cartons of soap to the Mulanje District Hospital Office, the Mulanje Local Government Assistant for OAF, Frank Mkwaila, stated that even though the organisation provides agricultural services, they decided to intervene as the pandemic affects everyone, including farmers, noting that it was their responsibility to make sure that their farmers remain in good health to cultivate and produce enough food for the country.

‘This is why we have made this donation that will be distributed in all health centres so that farmers can be protected in their respective homes. We feel that this was a time to come together and support the government in fighting the spread of [Covid-19]. We have distributed more than 26,000 bars of soap and [Covid-19] information flyers to our farmers and trained them on [Covid-19] best hygiene practices to prevent transmission with help from the Ministry of Health’, he added.

The Mulanje District Council Director of Health and Social Services (DHSS), Alinafe Kalanga, thanked the organisation for the donations.

She noted that ‘there has been a very positive response from NGOs starting from the day we called upon stakeholders to come forth with support. We are grateful to One Acre Fund and all other organisations for responding positively’.

However, Kalanga urged partners in the health sector to contact the district health office before making donations as they have plans in place that needed to be followed in combating the Covid-19.
