Executive Director of Malawi Human Rights Resource Centre (MHRRC), Emma Kaliya, has called for more efforts in promoting gender equality and women empowerment in Malawi.
Kaliya made this call during the civil society consultation meeting on Beijing Platform for Action held in Blantyre.
‘The gathering has been done to solicit views from women in different sectors of the society on what they think has been the progress made in implementing the Beijing Platform for Action’, Nyasa Times quoted Kaliya as saying.
‘We had so many thematic areas to discuss some of them include violence against women and girls’.
Kaliya acknowledged the recent appointment of High Court and Supreme Court judges, noting that ‘it is the first time we are having 50:50 representation’.
President Lazarus Chakwera had appointed Justice Ivy Kamanga to serve as Justice of the Supreme Court.
The president also named Agnes Patemba, Violet Chipao, Annelime Kanthambi, Vikochi Chima, Maureen Kondowe, and Charlote Wezi Malonda as High Court Judges.
The six women are among the 12 newly appointed judges of the High Court.
‘This is one of the thematic areas of the 12 critical areas of Beijing Platporm for Action as the issue of women in decision making process is crucial’, Kaliya said.
The Beijing Platform for Action has 12 key areas, which include women and poverty, education and training of women, women’s rights, women and media, women and environment, violence against women, women, and health.
