The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) in Malawi has advised President Lazarus Chakwera and his Tonse Alliance administration to fulfil their promise to Malawians.

Development Diaries understands that the Tonse Alliance government had promised to improve the country’s food security, fight unemployment, corruption, and promote quality education and infrastructure development.

However, HRDC, in a New Year’s message said the government had been slow in fulfilling its promise to the people.

Although the coalition commended the government for achieving some feats, it urged the administration to widen, deepen and sustain initiatives towards the growth of the country.

‘We remind the Tonse government that Malawians have suffered enough from broken promises before and now look forward to this government to reward them for their sacrifices and trust by quickly meeting their expectations’, HRDC said in a statement.

HRDC highlighted the government’s promise to create one million jobs.

‘The youth of the country look forward to the government to deliver on this promise and we expect an appropriate roadmap on the programme’, it said.

The coalition also noted that the Tonse Alliance administration made a lot of promises of arresting a number of high-level corruption suspects, but has ‘dampened this hype by suddenly slowing down investigations and prosecution of cases’.

‘Malawians expect that in the year 2021, the government will speed up the processing of corruption cases to deliver a strong statement that abuse of public resources will no longer be tolerated in this country’.
