Malawi: Good Neighbours Provides Medical Aid

Good Neighbours International Malawi has donated cholera and Covid-19 medical supplies to the country’s Ministry of Health.

The organisation’s Country Director for Malawi, Gyojin Joo, said her organisation could not stand idly by without providing support as Malawi battled against the twin scourges of Covid-19 and cholera.

Data from the World Health Organisation (WHO) shows that between March and October 2022 a total of 6,056 cholera cases, including 183 deaths, have been reported from 27 of 29 districts in Malawi.

Cases have been reported in Nsanje and Machinga districts since the outbreak originated in the southern region of the country.

Joo said her organisation decided to contribute to the efforts by the Ministry of Health to increase access to clean water, particularly in areas at risk of cholera outbreaks, and to ensure that communities have the knowledge and resources to use it safely.

‘In addition to cholera, Covid-19 has had a devastating impact on the world and Malawi is no exception’, Nyasa Times quoted her as saying.

‘Although regulations have been lifted to some degree, we must not let our guard down when it comes to prevention and protection.

‘Good Neighbours International Malawi strongly hopes that this donation will support the continued use of masks in Malawi’.

Malawi’s Minister of Health, Khumbize Chiponda, disclosed that the fight against cholera is far from over, adding that as of 16 January, 2023, Malawi had registered a cumulative 25,458 cases of which 846 had lost their lives.
