ActionAid has built and handed over a hostel for 72 schoolgirls in Bolero Secondary School, Rumphi, Malawi.
The Executive Director of nonprofit, Pamela Kuwali, who made this known in a post on her LinkedIN page, said the intervention will provide a safe and serene environment to achieve greater learning outcomes for the schoolgirls.
‘The hostel will enable 72 girls learn in a secure and conducive environment without worrying about long distances to reach’, Kuwali said.
Without full basic and secondary education, girls are often left vulnerable to the effects of child marriage and extreme poverty in Malawi.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) four calls for inclusive and equitable quality education and promotion of lifelong learning opportunities for all, which Malawi is a signatory to.
However, schoolgirls in Malawi clearly face a number of obstacles when it comes to accessing and succeeding in school.
Data from the Firelight Foundation shows that less than 15 percent of women have any years of secondary school education, with 42 percent of girls married before the age of 18.
Long distances between the villages and the school, the high secondary school fees, and the poor quality of education are some of the challenges.
According to the European Union (EU), the transition rate from primary school to secondary school in Malawi is very low, with secondary school enrolment dominated by boys.
