Libya: Citizens Denied Right to Information

Libyans in Benghazi have been denied access to communication as the country falters in respecting its obligations to protect civilians.

Development Diaries reports that internet and telecommunications have been cut off by the eastern authorities in the country following armed clashes involving soldiers tied to the Libyan National Army.

Obtaining and sharing information is a human right, and communications represent a lifeline for civilians in conflict zones.

Since a NATO-backed rebellion in 2011, Libya has had little peace, and in 2014, it broke apart into warring eastern and western factions.

Currently, the national security situation is unstable, particularly due to sporadic violence and armed conflicts between various opposing militia groups across the nation.

Development Diaries calls on the Libyan authorities to respect citizens’ right to information by restoring all communications in Benghazi.
