Liberia: UNFPA Provides Reproductive Health Kits

The United National Population Fund (UNFPA) has delivered a consignment of reproductive health kits to the Central Medicines Store (CMS) of Liberia‘s Ministry of Health.

Some of the U.S.$50,000 worth of medical items included Levonirgestrel, Azithromycin Dehydrate, Cefixime, Lamivudine, pregnancy test dip strip, post-rape care checklist for women, men, and children.

Data from UNFPA indicates that reproductive health problems are a leading cause of ill health and death for women and girls of childbearing age in developing countries including Liberia.

SDG Three: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages

The SDG Three calls for achieving universal access to sexual and reproductive health care, reducing global maternal death rates, and ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030.

Women of childbearing age constitute approximately 23 percent of Liberia’s 3.5 million population. The population growth rate is estimated at 2.1 percent with a total fertility rate of 4.6 percent and teenage pregnancy rate of 38 percent.

UNFPA Deputy County Representative, Leonard Kamugisha, commended the Liberian government for being transparent and accountable in handling the reproductive health supplies UNFPA has provided in the past years.

‘We are very pleased that we have not seen or heard of incidents of mismanagement of the products that UNFPA provides to government’, New Republic Liberia quoted him as saying.

He said strengthening the health sector of the West African country is one of the key priorities of the UN agency.
