Liberia: NCSCL Faults Kemayah’s Confirmation

National Civil Society Council of Liberia (NCSCL) has faulted the confirmation of Ambassador Dee-Maxwell Kemayah as Minister of Foreign Affairs despite allegation of sexual harassment against him.

Development Diaries understands that Kemayah, who serves as Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, was accused of sexual harassment by a Liberian staff of the mission, Whynee Cummings Wilson, immediately after his nomination as Minister of Foreign Affairs was announced.

Ms. Wilson, in a social media post, reminded the US Mission, UN authorities and Liberia’s Minister of Gender, Williametta Saydee-Tarr, how Ambassador Kemayah allegedly molested and sexually harassed her on 8 January, 2020.

Kemayah has since denied the allegation.

‘Fellow-citizens, let it be known in history that the National Civil Society of Liberia has been deeply involved with this matter from the onset’, the civil society council said in a statement.

The NCSCL said it had advised the senate to make full disclosure of the procedure and outcomes of the special investigative committee and to publish its findings in order to proceed with the confirmation of the appointee.

‘This is indeed regrettable, and we condemn this action by the senate in no uncertain terms’, the statement read.

‘We call for justice for all parties and hope that everything will be done to resolve this issue so that all parties’ interests can be fairly served.

‘We do call on the newly confirmed foreign minister to do all in his power in pursuit of the timely and expedient resolution of this matter especially now that he is our national and international face to the entire world’.
