Officials from the National Council of Chiefs and Elders of Liberia (NACCEL) and UN Women have inspected the pilot alternative income-generating project in Sonkey town.
It was learnt that officials from the country’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, Plan International, and its co-implementing partner, WE4SELF, were also part of the delegation that assessed the progress of the project.
The pilot project was launched under the European Union, United Nations, and government of Liberia spotlight initiative to provide traditional practitioners with alternative ways of generating income and eliminate harmful practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM).
More than 300 traditional practitioners are expected to be economically empowered with climate-smart agriculture, business development, and literacy skills in five spotlight counties in Liberia.
It was learnt that during the visit, the traditional practitioners showcased the rice that they harvested and dug up cassava from their farm.
