Some civil society organisations (CSOs) have called on the legislature in Liberia to increase water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) budgetary allocation.
The CSOs made the request when they visited Senator Jonathan Kaipay, Liberia’s newly elected representative at the Economic Community for West African States (ECOWAS).
Chairman of CSOs operating in the WASH sector, Gus Myers, said the government needed to be supportive when it comes to creating handwashing awareness.
‘Now that we have an institution, the national WASH commission, that has the full mandate to ensure the WASH practices are observed, policies are followed and implement, it will be important to note that the commission has an increased budget for the WASH sector’, Front Page Africa quoted Myers as saying.
For his part, Senator Kaipay said the establishment of a WASH caucus at the ECOWAS Parliament will improve the hygienic conditions in the region.
‘I think it is about time that the civil society organisations (CSOs) working with the WASH commission have their own goals and plans they can account for in creating the necessary advocacy for increase budget for the wash sector’, Senator Kaipay was quoted as saying.
He assured the WASH commission of the legislature’s support in budgetary allotment especially as water is a fundamental need for human existence.
