The Gbawin Literacy Project (GLP) has provided over 200 needy students of Barsee-Giah Public School, Liberia, with several educational items.
The U.S.-based nonprofit donated items such as bookbags, copybooks, reading books, and dictionaries, and bingo games.
Founder of the humanitarian organisation, James Monxhwedy, said that the items were donated in response to Liberia’s economic challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The devastation caused by the pandemic has adversely affected the economy and educational systems of many developed and developing countries.
During the peak of the pandemic in Liberia, many parents and guardians either lost their jobs or were given compulsory leaves from their institutions.
‘My dream and aspiration for [children] in Liberia is to extend my humanitarian programme to the [15] counties of the country, which I foresee in not too distance future, we must all work together to put smiles on the faces of our [children] and make them feel like any other [children] in the developed World’, Monxhwedy said.
Monxhwedy, who was accompanied by his wife, Margaret Thomas, said GLP received most of its funding from individuals and organisations in the United States of America.
For her part, Thomas, a Grenadian-American, said, ‘My story is of no difference from [children] in Liberia. I see the many sufferings Liberian [children] go through just to attain education as the same within my home and I am willing to go at any length in assisting my husband to invest into the education of Liberian children’.
Also speaking, Head of Administration at Baree-Giah Public, Ziba Kwenah, lauded the organisation for providing the items.
