Liberia: Activists Make TRC Implementation Call

A group of civil society organisations (CSOs) in Liberia have called on the government of the country to implement the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) recommendations.

The CSOs made the call at a four-day public outreach and awareness on the TRC recommendations for rural community leaders to promote accountability.

The outreach, Development Diaries gathered, brought together participants from Bong, Nimba and Lofa Counties.

The event was organised by the Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR), in collaboration with the National Civil Society Council of Liberia (NCSCL), with support from the Office of the High Commission on Human Rights (OHCHR) and the Centre for Democracy and Development.

The Liberian TRC made a total of 47 recommendations to the Liberian government, ranging from establishing national culture centres to promote Liberia’s diverse culture to ensuring that perpetrators of gross violations of human right pay reparations to victims.

‘I will create awareness across Nimba County to have citizens understand the importance of transitional justice so that they can pressure their lawmakers for the establishment of War and Economic crimes Court and the full implementation of the TRC Report’, Head of the Special Emergency to Restore Children’s Hope (SERCH), Janet Flomo, said.

‘We will now demand the implementation of the TRC report because we want fair justice for those that received pain during the war to be able to express themselves in the court.

‘We want those women that were victimised during the war to get the needed justice because they were targets.

I want to see those that did things wrongly during the war be judge and be punished by the law’.

The TRC made suggestions to ensure that victims of the Liberian Civil Wars received appropriate compensation and that perpetrators are punished.

Additionally, they suggested that resources and infrastructure be made available to settle any lasting problems or conflicts.
