Recent report of the misuse of the real-time tracking platform, initially designed to combat kidnapping, suggests a critical failure in maintaining the integrity and purpose of intelligence-led policing in Nigeria.
Development Diaries reports that former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase, introduced a tracking platform in 2015 to allow for real-time monitoring of kidnappers’ activities and initiated intelligence-led policing.
However, according to a report by Vanguard, it has been alleged that the tracking system meant to combat kidnapping ended up being used to monitor ‘enemies and mistresses’ of politicians, with claims that successive IGPs did not know what to do with the technical tracking platform.
It is deeply concerning to learn that a tool designed for public safety and the protection of citizens was allegedly misused by those in positions of power.
This report of gross misuse goes further to undermine the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force and erodes public trust in the force.
Also, the alleged exploitation of this technology by politicians to monitor their perceived enemies and mistresses is a violation of privacy and a clear abuse of power.
It is also unethical and a betrayal of the public’s trust. Tools meant for national security and public safety should never be co-opted for personal gain or to serve the interests of a few at the expense of the many.
This development highlights the urgent need for stricter oversight and accountability in the use of surveillance technologies.
Recall that SBM Intelligence, in its latest report, revealed that Nigerians paid N1.04 billion as ransom to kidnappers in one year.
This is why those responsible for this alleged misuse must face the full extent of the law, and the platform is returned to its original purpose of tracking and apprehending kidnappers, to protect citizens.
To this end, and to address this, the IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, must urgently separate the technical and operational units, ensuring that each operates independently with strict oversight mechanisms.
Also, a dedicated oversight committee should be established to monitor the use of the tracking platform, with clear protocols to prevent unauthorised access and misuse.
