In light of the increasing insecurity in Nigeria and the incessant kidnappings in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nigerians need to put their safety and well-being first in every decision they make.
The FCT has recorded close to 50 kidnapping cases involving over 200 people within the last three years, and since the start of 2024, at least 15 people have allegedly been abducted in the FCT. This is alarming.
Below are five essential safety tips to help you navigate these challenging times.
1. Stay informed
Stay updated on the latest news and security developments in your area. Follow reputable news sources and official government channels for accurate information. Remain vigilant and be aware of your surroundings, especially in public places. Stay informed about any potential security threats and act accordingly. Also, keep yourself updated on the current security situation in your area.
2. Avoid high-risk zones
Be cautious about entering areas known for criminal activity or kidnapping incidents. Plan your routes and activities to avoid high-risk zones. Familiarise yourself with maps and follow trusted routes recommended by security authorities.
3. Keep a low profile
Keep a low profile and avoid drawing unnecessary attention to yourself. Limit the use of flashy jewelry, expensive gadgets, or clothing that may make you a target. Be discreet about your personal information and travel plans.
4. Ensure necessary communication
Maintain open lines of communication with family, friends, and neighbours. Establish a network where you can share information about security concerns or incidents. Let someone know your whereabouts, especially if you are travelling or going to unfamiliar areas. In case of an emergency, having a reliable means of communication is crucial.
5. Enhance home security
Strengthen the security measures around your home. Install quality locks on doors and windows, and consider investing in a security system. Also, be cautious about sharing too much information on social media, especially regarding your daily routines, vacations, or valuable possessions.
Remember, these tips are general recommendations, and the effectiveness of any safety measures can vary depending on the specific circumstances.
Also, while these tips can contribute to personal safety, addressing the root causes of insecurity in Nigeria requires collective efforts at the community, regional, and national levels.
It is best to stay informed, be proactive, and encourage a culture of safety within your community to navigate these challenging times more effectively.
