Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) has been ranked as a top NGO providing humanitarian services to needy citizens since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a survey conducted by Trends and Insights Africa (TIFA).
‘Among entities mentioned as most known for providing assistance to the needy, Shining Hope for Communities leads by far (45 percent – statistically identical to the 44 percent it received in round two) compared to the next most frequently mentioned individual provider of such assistance (Red Cross at 16 percent, which received 5 percent of mentions in round two)’, the TIFA report noted.
Chief Executive Officer of SHOFCO Kennedy Odede said the organisation had screened 1,830,931 people for Covid-19.
‘SHOFCO has distributed an additional 19,700,000 litres of water via water truck distribution, and reached 1,543,754 slum dwellers with household-level distributions of soap and sanitisers’, TUKO quoted Odede as saying.
It is understood that SHOFCO has worked with the government and corporates to create distribution channels in Kibera, Mathare, Mukuru kwa Njenga, Kawangware, Korogocho, Nyalenda, Obunga, Maweni, Bangladesh, Mishomoroni, Likoni, Kamukunji, Manyatta and Soweto slums.
‘Covid-19 has shown the importance of community-led response to crisis. When the community takes ownership, it becomes possible to do rapid distribution of supplies and information that keep slum residents safe during this pandemic,” Odede said.
