Humanity First has conducted free eye screenings for 239 people in Mlolongo, Kenya.
Tagged the ‘Gift of Sight’ event, the organisation carried out the exercise in partnership with Lions SightFirst Eye Hospital.
It was gathered that Humanity First also donated 51 pairs of eye glasses to patients and booked seven patients for cataract removal operations.
‘In partnership with [the Lions Sight First Eye Hospital] we had the privilege to hold a free eye screening camp today at the Katani secondary school in Mlolongo’, Humanity First tweeted.
According to the Kenya Ministry of Health, an estimated 15.5 percent of Kenyans are in need of quality eye care services including cataract surgery.
Cataracts form when protein builds up in the eye lens, making the eyes cloudy and preventing light from passing through clearly.
Data from the National Centre for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) shows that the prevalence of blindness in Kenya is estimated as 0.7 percent, with cataract contributing 43 percent.
