Jigawa Flooding: ActionAid Delivers Funds

ActionAid has provided N68 million to at least 120 households taking refuge at internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps in three local governments of Jigawa State, northwest Nigeria.

The cash and non-food items worth £140,000 were provided by ActionAid Nigeria in collaboration with Baba Azumi Foundation (BAF) with support from Start Fund.

According to the Head of the BAF Foundation, Aishatu Suleiman-Jahun, the intervention was given to IDPs in three local government areas – Miga, Gwiwa and Kaugama.

Jigawa’s Ministry of Health recently confirmed 15 cholera cases in the samples of 600 suspected cases tested across the state.

Also, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has confirmed Jigawa as the worst-hit state by the floods ravaging parts of the country.

The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said over 70,000 people were displaced and are now taking refuge at 75 IDP camps and with their relatives following the torrential rain that resulted in widespread flooding in the state.

According to the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), over 2.4 million people in Nigeria, 60 percent of whom are children, are at risk of waterborne diseases, drowning and malnutrition as the country continues to grapple with the effect of flooding.
