Initiative for Youth Awareness on Migration, Immigration Development and Reintegration (IYAMIDR) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Genoa and Genova Consultant Training Institute to train Nigerian youths on various vocations.
Development Diaries reports that the Executive Director of IYAMIDR-Nigeria and facilitator, Solomon Okoduwa, said the engagement serves as an intervention for manpower development for oil and gas-related sector.
According to him, the initiative is aimed at enhancing the capacity of Nigerian youths with viable skills to boost the Nigerian economy in various sectors, thereby curbing unemployment and youth restiveness.
He noted that over 200 youths are expected to undergo the training.
The Nigerian National Education Policy document provides that a Nigerian must be provided with basic tools for further educational advancement, including preparation for trade and crafts of the locality.
Okoduwa said, ‘This project is geared towards the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in building confidence in the Nigerian youth and making Nigeria great again’.
It is understood that youths under the programme will acquire training in welding/fabrication, ship dockyard, yacht maintenance, rail track installation and maintenance.
The fact that vocational education has not yet fully taken root in Nigeria just serves as further proof that some issues still need to be resolved.
The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) has recommended that Nigeria must close the vocational skill gap in order to meet its human resource needs and create jobs.
