A group of civil society activists has planned to gather outside the Ministry of Justice in Conakry, Guinea, on 18 September to demand the release of members of the National Front for the Defence of the Constitution (FNDC).
Development Dairies understands that President Alpha Condé has accepted his party’s nomination to run as its candidate for the presidential election on 18 October.
Condé, who has been in power since 2010, pushed through a change in the constitution following a referendum in March that effectively reset the two-term limit in the constitution.
Guinea voted overwhelmingly for a change in the constitution, according to the provisional results of a referendum, an outcome that the opposition fears will allow Condé to govern for 12 more years.
However, opposition supporters boycotted the referendum and have held widespread protests over the amendments in recent months, resulting in clashes with security forces and, consequently, arrest of activists.
It was learnt that opposition supporters had gathered in several districts of Conakry, including Tomboleya, Entag, and Bonfi, to protest.
According to media sources, clashes broke out between the police and demonstrators along Autoroute Fidel Castro, leading to security forces firing tear gas to disperse a crowd of protesters.
