West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI) has donated 42 laptops to 14 civil society organisations (CSOs) in Ghana as part of the WACSI-TechSoup hardware donation project.
WACSI, in partnership with TechSoup, initiated the project in March 2021 to support nonprofits operating in seven member countries.
The technical-support project was initiated to assist CSOs in Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Cameroon, Sierra Leone, Benin and The Gambia struggling to operate amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
CSOs that received laptops in Ghana were Bless Jet Foundation, Centre for Capacity Improvement for the Wellbeing of the Vulnerable (CIWED), Centre for Communities Education and Youth Development, and Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations-Eastern Region.
Others were Global Women Development Promoters (GLODEC), Gideon Agenyegah Dream Ventures, NewsBridge Africa, Norsaac, North Eastern Corridor Integrated Development Agency (NECIDA), Rural Initiatives Ghana Foundation, Safe-Child Advocacy, Support Services Foundation, Tele-Bere VSL Association (Tele-Bere) and Urban Poor Child Organisation.
The regional body of CSOs said the project was initiated after a study revealed that several CSOs in the aforementioned countries had greatly been hit by the pandemic.
Many CSOs in Africa are facing a critical threat from the Covid-19 pandemic due to lack of funding as they have been forced to downsise and lay off staff at a time when the work of nonprofits have become critical.
Monitoring and Evaluation Head at WACSI, Franck Sombo, appealed to donors to support the initiative.
Executive Director of GLODEC, Victoria Norgbe, said that the laptops will help in boosting their job especially their database.
