The Sung Bie’la Foundation has donated learning materials to several schoolchildren across eight schools in Bakwu and Bolgatanga in Ghana’s Upper East Region following the completion of its educational tour.
Development Diaries reports that the foundation delivered textbooks, writing materials, learning aids and other suppliers to students during the tour.
Students from Gentiga Primary and Junior High School, Bansi Junior High School, Yakut Modern Girls School, Yebongo Junior High School, Kusanaba Junior High School, and Kusanaba Senior High School in the Bawku Municipal, Binduri District, Bawku West District, and Bolgatanga areas benefited from the donation.
It is understood that the foundation also launched the ‘Catch Them Young’ reading project which seeks to improve the reading habit of students.
About 7.9 million people aged six or older in Ghana can neither read nor write with understanding, according to data from Ghana Statistics Service.
While nearly 623,500 children of primary school age are still not enrolled in school, a shortage of school books and other learning materials remains one of the challenges affecting the country’s education section.
The Founder, Sung Biel’la Foundation, Zenabu Awinbe Salifu, believes making a difference in the lives of children in rural communities and helping them build a brighter future is a collective effort of every citizen.
The foundation said it is committed to promoting education as a key tool for breaking the cycle of poverty in rural communities.
