The SOS Children’s Village Ghana has commissioned a solar energy and water facility for the Papramanten community, Fanteakwa North District of the Eastern region.

Development Diaries reports that the project is part of the organisation’s goal of building the capacity of families and communities by providing them with support and resources to empower them to become self-resilient.

The project was commissioned in collaboration with Joissam Company Limited and Green Tec Africa.

The solar energy facility, fitted with a solar light, a portable water container, a phone charging unit, and a refrigerator, is expected to provide electricity and its associated services to the people of the community.

The water facility attached to the solar energy system has a mechanised borehole that would also provide clean and portable water to schoolchildren and community members in the area.

‘We believe that access to electricity is not just a luxury; it is a fundamental right that can catalyse progress, improve education and enhance healthcare’, the National Director of the SOS Children’s Villages, Alex Kekula, said in a statement.

‘The solar panel we believe will not only provide clean and sustainable energy but will also serve as a beacon of hope for generations to come’.

The water project, according to Kekula, is a fundamental resource to life, adding that it was provided to promote water, sanitation and hygiene to create a positive impact of safe access to water in schools and improve health, growth and continued education of school-aged children and the community.

About 72 percent of the citizens had access to treated water from 2015 to 2021, according to a report published by the Ghana Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources.
