The Pentecost Social Services (PENTSOS) has provided a mechanised borehole water system for the Kpalworgu community in the Wa East District of the Upper West Region of Ghana.
The water facility, worth GH¢50,000, was estimated to serve close to 2,000 residents of the community and its environs, but has been extended to the health centre, the community school, the town and the Fulani section of the community.
SDG Six: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
The organisation’s Director, Richard Amaning, while commissioning the facility, said that the facility was put in place in response to a request by the community during the visit of the Home and Urban Mission (HUM) team to the community about three years ago.
He said, ‘The role of Pentsos includes expanding access to education through sponsorships, building health and educational facilities and empowering the youth with livelihood interventions for job creation’.
He prayed the community to take care of the facility and encouraged members of the water committee that was later inaugurated at the event to take good care of the project.
According to findings by IRC Wash, assessments conducted on water facilities in the WA district showed that service levels provided by water facilities in the districts are very low.
The assessment also showed that less than ten percent of handpumps provided basic services because people travel more than 500 metres to access potable water in the northern part of Ghana.
The findings showed further that the activities of water provisions have been donor-driven with significant concentration on investment of new infrastructure.
