Ghana: Addo Backs New Voters Register

The President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, has backed the Electoral Commission (EC) in its decision to compile a new voters register ahead of the general election scheduled to hold this year.

Speaking in a meeting in Oslo with the Ghanaian community in Norway, the president said, ‘[W]e are getting ourselves ready for December 7. The [EC] is going to compile a new register. It appears there is now an eight-year cycle for the EC to compile a register. They did so in 2012 and 2004. [I] think it makes a lot of sense. The national census itself is done on a ten-year basis. [T]heir intention is to begin in April. We want everybody in Ghana who can vote to register’.

However, many civil society organisations have rejected the EC’s proposal to compile a new electoral register ahead of the 2020 general elections. Civil society organisations have argued that a new register will waste money, recommending the EC update its current software instead.
