Expectations as Tenth National Assembly Leaders Emerge

Former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, south-south Nigeria, Godswill Akpabio, has been elected President of the country’s tenth Senate.

Development Diaries reports that the Clerk of the National Assembly, Sani Tambuwal, who presided over the session, declared Akpabio winner of the election for the Senate presidency after he won 63 votes, leaving his rival, Abdulazeez Yari, with 46 votes.

Also, Jibrin Barau emerged as the Senate Deputy President unopposed.

Meanwhile, Tajudeen Abbas has emerged as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Abbas polled 353 votes to defeat Idris Wase and Aminu Jaji who polled three votes each, while Benjamin Kalu emerged as Deputy Speaker unopposed.

It is pertinent to remind the lawmakers who have been elected into principal positions that the process of lobbying and horse trading is over, and it is time to put the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians at the forefront.

Development Diaries had called on the elected lawmakers, both at the national and state levels, to ensure that carrying out their constitutional mandate becomes a top priority.

We also called on them to ensure that they make laws in the interest of the people they are there to represent, not for selfish gains.

Furthermore, members of the tenth National Assembly must ensure that the country’s scarce resources are prudently spent while holding the executive arm of government to account.
