Netflix and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) have announced a call for participation in their short film competition – ‘African Folktales, Reimagined’.
Africa has a rich heritage of storytelling and a young population that is ready to step up and tell Africa’s stories, in all their multiplicity.
The competition therefore aims to find the bravest, wittiest, and most surprising retellings of some of Africa’s most-loved folktales.
Benefits
- Six winners will have their short films (12–20 minutes) launched on the Netflix service in 2022
- Each of the six winners will receive a production grant of U.S.$75,000 (through a local production company) to develop, shoot and post-produce their films
- Each of the six winners, in addition, will receive $25,000
Eligibility
- Filmmakers should be based in any of the countries in sub-Saharan Africa
- The competition is open to individuals seeking to venture into feature film development and production
- Entrants must have a minimum of two years and a maximum of five years of demonstrable professional experience in the audio-visual industry
- Applicants must have developed and produced one to two theatrical feature films, television fiction, documentaries, or two to three short films and/or commercials
