Nigeria’s acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has expressed his eagerness towards fulfilling the requirements of his new role.
Development Diaries reports that Egbetokun, during his decoration ceremony as IGP, said he feels like a tiger and a lion ready to chase away all the criminals in Nigeria.
‘I really can’t describe how I feel presently, but if I have to tell you anything, I will tell you that right now I feel like a tiger inside of me ready to chase away all the criminals in Nigeria’, he said.
‘And some other times I feel like a lion in me ready to devour all the internal enemies of Nigeria, that’s my feeling right now’.
While the eagerness and enthusiasm of the IGP is commendable, there is a need to remind him of the huge task that lies ahead.
The insecurity situation in the country does not seem to be abating, signifying more efforts in the area of internal security operations.
While killings attributed to terror groups may have declined, deaths from other violent actors like banditry, herders-farmers clashes, kidnapping, and robbery have spiked.
According to data from Nigeria Security Tracker (NST), at least 54,948 people were killed in Nigeria due to violent acts from May 2015 to May 2022.
The duties of the Nigerian police include the prevention and detection of crime, the apprehension of offenders, the preservation of law and order, and the protection of life and property.
Development Diaries urges the IGP to hit the ground running by translating his words into action towards tackling the country’s internal security challenges.
