It’s another weekend and in a country like Nigeria, weekends are equal to parties.
Planning any type of party, no matter the type of occasion, might not be the easiest activity to pull off.
It takes a toll on the host due to the great deal of time and energy that has been invested into making everything as welcoming as possible.
As you attend another party this weekend, be it a big party, a small party or a formal gathering, here are some party etiquette to keep in mind on how to be a better guest to your host.
- Dress appropriately
Getting the right dress code for a party makes you an attentive party guest. Most parties signify dress code when they give out invitations, hence adhering to the dress code gives the host a sense of satisfaction.
2. Don’t come hungry
It can be annoying to have to wait for food, especially if it is served after everyone has come and socialised. Hence, it is important to make adequate preparations and avoid arriving at the party hungry.
3. Do not bring uninvited guests
The act of bringing along uninvited guests is impolite. For this reason, only bring a guest with you when the invitation specifically demands it.
4. Keep up a cheerful mood
Even if you have had a bad day before arriving at a party, when you get in, it is important you don’t ruin other people’s moods by talking about your negative experience.
It is always better to drop the bad mood at the entrance and put on a more cheerful outlook.
5. End conversations politely
While having short conversations with one another is common during parties, it is important to end a conversation politely.
6. Listen more than you talk
Being able to listen carefully when spoken to shows you have a sincere interest in people. People are flattered when someone shows they are intentional about listening to what they have to say.
7. Keep conversation casual
The party’s conversations should be informal and light. Do not go into detail on significant political, religious, or health matters. Additionally, avoid slandering people, especially if it involves a party guest.
8. Show gratitude
Thank your host sincerely before you leave, and think about following up the next day with a call. A written note is acceptable if the occasion was formal or conducted in your honour, but even informal gatherings may call for one.
