Egypt’s Minister of International Cooperation, Dr Rania Al-Mashat, has underscored the strong cooperation efforts between the country and the UN amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
The minister made this known during a high-level meeting with UN agencies working in Egypt.
The meeting was attended by the Resident Coordinator of the UN Office in Egypt, Richard Dictus, as well as directors of 15 UN agencies working in the Maghreb nation.
Al-Mashat noted that her visit to Luxor in celebration of the UN’s 75th anniversary was an uplifting experience, noting that the visit represented an example of how projects with development partners could be scaled up to achieve impact and inspire other countries in the region.
She had inspected a number of ongoing and new development projects in Luxor, where the World Food Programme (WFP) is assisting over 120,000 people.
The UN agency is supporting people in Luxor through climate change interventions, awareness and nutrition projects, as well as school feeding and other initiatives so that communities may become more self-reliant.
The projects, it was gathered, fall under the ministry’s ‘Global Partnerships Narrative’ focused on three main pillars: people at the core, projects in action, and purpose as the driver.
‘Egypt’s response to the first peak of the Covid-19 pandemic has been amongst the best in Africa and the Middle East’, Resident Coordinator of the UN Office in Egypt, Richard Dictus, said.
He said that this was due to the health, quarantine, and lockdown measures taken by the government.
Representative and Country Director of WFP in Egypt, Mengstab Haile, said that all UN agencies were inspired by Egypt’s approach to cooperation during the Covid-19 pandemic.
He also said that the minister’s visit to Luxor gave communities in the villages ‘hope and encouragement’.
