Minister for Social Solidarity in Egypt, Nevin El-Qabbaj, says the ministry is close to issuing the executive regulations on the law which regulates civil society organisations operating in the country.
El-Qabbaj made this known during a meeting with USAID Egypt Director, Leslie Reed.
Development Diaries learnt that their discussion covered the new NGO law, social protection, economic empowerment, crises and relief, and efforts to combat all forms of violence against women.
The country’s House of Representatives passed an amended NGO law in July 2019, after the existing version of the law was criticised for imposing steep restrictions on the work of tens of thousands of CSOs in the country.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly formed a committee to oversee the amendment of the original NGO law in 2018, after President Abdel-Fattah El asked for revisions to be made.
On the amended NGO law, El-Qabbaj, according to a statement from the ministry, said that the executive regulations were created in partnership with community leaders, CSOs, MPs, as well as specialised experts and knowledgeable figures.
On her part, Reed, according to the statement, commended the government of Egypt for amending the law, adding that it will boost social participation.
She also lauded the ministry for addressing issues affecting the lives of marginalised citizens.
