EFCC Should Address What Happened to the ‘Eagle’ on Twitter

As some Nigerians would say, e don red! Was the ‘Eagle’ actually hacked and deleted from the X (formerly Twitter) platform?

Many Nigerians are still wondering what happened, as this development is capable of leaving a big dent in citizens’ confidence in the country’s foremost economic and financial crime watchdog.

We have been wondering why searching ‘@officialEFCC’, also known as the ‘Eagle’, on the X platform no longer pops up the official account of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) account.

Yes, we are as surprised as you are. The situation is concerning as the EFCC has been holding internet fraudsters and bad actors accountable using the Cybercrime Act.

This development suggests that there are gaps in EFCC’s security system for online information, and this should make every Nigerian concerned.

It does not inspire confidence, and the confidence Nigerians already have in the institution is being threatened by this breach in information management.

The Cybercrime Act provides an effective and unified legal, regulatory, and institutional framework for the prohibition, prevention, detection, prosecution and punishment of cybercrimes in Nigeria, and if the EFCC is now a victim of cyber attack, what confidence can Nigerians have in the agency carrying out its duty?

We also understand that the spokesperson for the agency did not immediately respond to this issue. This is another unwelcoming development. The EFCC ought to urgently respond to this matter to prevent misinformation on the actual cause.

The Chairman of the EFCC, Olanipekun Olukoyede, should immediately look into this matter and ensure it is addressed accordingly.

Make garri no come pass water’ before EFCC go take appropriate action. The time for action is now.
