The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has deployed 250 observers for the presidential election in Nigeria.
Development Diaries reports that the regional body made this known on its official Twitter handle, noting that the observers were deployed on 23 February, 2023, in Abuja.
Over 80 million Nigerians are expected at the polls on Saturday, 25 February, to elect the successor to President Muhammadu Buhari and federal lawmakers.
President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, had earlier restated that the regional body was strongly committed to supporting peaceful elections and good governance in Nigeria and other member states.
Touray said the outcome of the polls should be acceptable and reflect the will of the Nigerian people because it will send a strong signal to countries conducting elections within West Africa to adhere to democracy and good governance.
The United Nations and ECOWAS, in January 2023, warned Nigeria against violence in the elections.
