Djibouti: IGAD, EU Deliver Health Care Equipment

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has handed over mobile laboratory, common sanitary products, an ambulance and a vehicle to the government of Djibouti for the fight against Covid-19.

The health care equipment and other donations were made as part of the European Union (EU) and IGAD Covid-19 Response project in the Horn of Africa.

‘As part of the #EU-#IGAD #[Covid-19] Response Programme, an ambulance, an advanced ambulance and a mobile laboratory to be handed over to the Minister of Health of #Djibouti’, IGAD tweeted from its verified handle.

Djibouti has recorded more than 13,100 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and over 170 people have died since the start of the pandemic.

The small African nation missed the global goal of vaccinating the most vulnerable ten percent of every country’s population against Covid-19 by the end of September 2021.

According to the Borgen Project, Djibouti has a severe lack of health care facilities, with access to health care facilities in remote communities astronomically worse.

‘The minister praised the efforts made by calling for the strengthening of this fruitful cross-border collaboration to fight effectively against this pandemic in the countries of [the IGAD region] @igadsecretariat’, the Djibouti Ministry of Health confirmed in a tweet.

The EU’s delegation to Djibouti and IGAD noted that the EU had allocated a €60 million package to help IGAD fight the health and socio-economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

‘This programme is part of a global effort by #TeamEurope in 130 countries to the tune of €46 billion’, the EU delegation to Djibouti and IGAD tweeted.
