The African Development Bank (AfDB) has announced a plan to develop sustainable infrastructure and improve economic governance in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Development Diaries reports that AfDB announced the plan in its 2023–2028 Country Strategy Paper (CSP) for the central African country.
It is understood that the bank plans to support the country in strengthening its value chains with high growth potential and improving human capital.
World Bank figures place the DRC among the five poorest countries in the world, as approximately 60 million Congolese, or roughly 62 percent of the population, survived on less than U.S.$2.15 per day in 2022.
In sub-Saharan Africa, the DRC is home to around one in six people who live in extreme poverty.
Development in the DRC has been a complex and challenging endeavour, marked by a history of political instability, conflict, and economic underdevelopment.
The country, rich in natural resources such as minerals, timber, and agricultural land, has faced persistent challenges in harnessing its potential for sustainable development.
The AfDB said its support will be concentrated in four different sectors: agriculture, transport, financial and economic governance, and human capital.
Also, an emphasis will be placed on cross-sector issues such as employment, climate change and gender.
