Civil Society Reports Adamawa Election Findings

The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room has reported that the 2023 supplementary elections conducted on 15 April fell short of the credibility threshold for the polls.

Development Diaries reports that the group of civil society organisations (CSOs) also condemned the illegal declaration of Aisha Dahiru Binani as the winner of the governorship poll in Adamawa State.

The Adamawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Yunusa Hudu Ari, declared Binani as winner, an action that violated sections 25 and 66 of the Electoral Act 2022.

The REC has been suspended by the Independent National Electoral commission (INEC).

‘Situation Room notes that the action of the suspended REC of Adamawa State represents the collapse of the current system of appointment of RECs and National Commissioners of INEC who are now being appointed by partisan political interests’, the Situation Room said in a statement.

‘It also represents the failure of the National Assembly to scrutinise nominees as required by law and going ahead to confirm partisan persons into INEC at all levels’.

The coalition of CSOs recommended that Nigeria needs to go back to the drawing board in order to address the problem of the reform of elections.
