Chad: Refugees in Dire Need of Food, Health Care – MSF

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has reported that refugees in eastern Chad are in dire need of food, water and health care, with many suffering from malaria, diarrhoea and malnutrition.

Development Diaries reports that displaced persons in Chad are desperately waiting for food rations due to shortages in aid support.

The conflict in Sudan has led to the displacement of more than four million people, 3.3 million of whom are displaced within Sudan itself.

More than 380,000 people have crossed into eastern Chad, most of whom have sought refuge in camps and settlements in and around the border town of Adré.

With over 150,000 refugees in just one camp in Adré, Camp Ecole, the need for food, water, sanitation, health care and protection services are unmet.

‘It is hard to describe what these people are going through’, MSF’s Emergency Coordinator in Adré, Susana Borges, said in a statement.

‘People are desperately waiting for food rations. Some have gone five weeks without receiving food.

‘People are feeding their children on insects, grass and leaves. They have much less water than they need and many have no shelter whatsoever.

‘How can they survive like this? People are desperately waiting for food rations, but they don’t even have basic cooking supplies. How will they cook if they have no pots?’.

Also, there are growing concerns over the increasing rate of malaria and malnutrition cases as these could severely impact the situation in Chad.

Development Diaries calls on international donors and humanitarian organisations to respond swiftly to MSF’s call for urgent humanitarian support in Adré and across Ouaddai province.
