Burkina Faso: MSF Suspends Operations in Region

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has suspended its activities in the Boucle du Mouhoun region, northwest Burkina Faso, following the murder of two of its staff members.

Development Diaries reports that the two Burkinabés, whose names were not disclosed by the organisation, worked with MSF as a driver and a logistics supervisor.

They were shot at by armed men on 08 February while carrying out medical support work in the region.

‘We are shocked and outraged by this killing’, MSF President, Dr Isabelle Defourny, said in a statement.

‘This is a deliberate and intentional attack on a clearly identified humanitarian team, during its medical work’.

Burkina Faso is currently facing unprecedented political, security and humanitarian crises, resulting in the displacement of nearly two million people following violence and fighting between armed groups and government forces.

‘Our priority is to support our two colleagues who survived the attack, as well as the families and loved ones of our colleagues who have been killed’, the statement added.

‘We are also going to engage with all the parties to the conflict to understand what happened’.

The organisation said between July and December 2022, its teams in Burkina Faso, working in four regions of the country, provided nearly 400,000 outpatient health consultations and assisted in the delivery of nearly 4,300 women.

Recall that MSF’s convoy of vehicles was attacked in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2022, leading to the closure of its operations in Nizi and Bambu towns.
