BBNaija: Challenge Young Leaders Face

BBNaija

Some housemates and followers of popular reality TV show Big Brother Naija appear to question the leadership qualities of the current All-Stars Head of House (HOH), Ilebaye.

One of the housemates, Pere, even called other housemates out for disregarding Ilebaye, as divergent views over the leadership of the youngest housemate kept viewers and their phones busy.

During his diary session with Big Brother, Pere shared some names of the All-Stars who have disrespected this week’s HOH in some way or the other.

‘The Head of House asked everyone to go and change the sheet and come back. Venita and Adekunle had the balls to tell the Head of House that if they go change the sheet they won’t come back’, he said.

‘Because she is 21 they feel they can put their legs over her’.

Followers also called out Cee-C, Venita and Mercy for questioning Ilebaye’s leadership skills. Cee-C even claimed that Ilebaye’s attitude during the task wager was proof that she could not run a business adequately.

‘You will make a terrible business owner. You have to learn… You will start learning now, when you give people a task, give them room to also do it’, Cee-C said.

As for Mercy, when Ilebaye asked for wager participation and gave the All-Stars instructions, she yelled at her.

As expected, many supporters of Ilebaye reacted to the situation on X. @malachi310A wrote, ‘I am watching this thing live as I type. Ilebaye was attacked. She literally was begging some people to join their wager task. I am surprised at the queen how she reacted 20 mins ago’.

@yhettyqueen1_ wrote, ‘Dem no wan rate HOH? This is unacceptable’.

@_blaq_girl wrote, ‘It’s how they don’t rate ilebaye as HOH. She’s literally begging them to come and do task but yes attack and shout on her that they’re very good at’.

Of course, there were other followers of the show with contrary opinions on the matter.

@Bandoboy001 wrote, ‘Clearly Ilebaye is doing something wrong that is triggering everyone. If it was one person I could let it slide but it’s not the 2nd 3rd or 4th. The constant here is always her’.

The issue here is basically a disrespect for leadership. When someone has been chosen to lead, others have a responsibility to follow. Disrespecting a leader based on their age is not only unfair but also detrimental to the values of equality and fairness that should underpin any leadership dynamic.

Dismissing a leader simply because they may not conform to certain physical expectations is not only unjust but also a missed opportunity to learn from their unique perspectives and insights. A leader should be judged on their merits, credentials, and actions rather than on flashy characteristics.

As for young leaders, to be able to win the game, they need to lead in a collaborative style, where they lead by example, listen to and learn from older people, building trust and mutual respect.
