Assault Video: Benue Police Provide Update

The police in Benue State, north-central Nigeria, have revealed plans to arraign Kelvin Iorfa, who was caught on camera assaulting his younger sister in the state.

Development Diaries reports that Iorfa, who has been identified as a church deacon, was arrested by the police after he was seen flogging the lady with a belt. She eventually fainted.

In a telephone interview with our correspondent, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Catherine Anene, said that Iorfa has been apprehended and questioned, but they, the police, have not found the lady.

‘Yes he has been arrested and interrogated, but we have not found the sister who was assaulted’, the Superintendent of Police (SP) said.

On the reason for the assault, Iorfa, according to Anene, said he was angry.

‘There’s no reason he gave other than he was angry over a discussion they had. We have not found the lady, we don’t know where she is so we are trying to locate her. She has not been seen since the incident which happened about four days ago’, she added.

‘He will definitely be arraigned for his offence, but we want to get some things in place before we go to court, probably today or tomorrow’.

Development Diaries calls on the police in the state to ensure that Iorfa is punished in accordance with the law, and that this case is not swept under the carpet.

We also urge the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to take up the matter to make sure that the right of the assaulted lady is protected.
