The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, has assured that the Nigerian army would do the needful to restore peace and security in Kaduna and other troubled states.
Development Diaries reports that the army chief made this known on Tuesday when he received the Governor of Kaduna State, Uba Sani, on a courtesy visit in Abuja.
According to Vanguard, Lagbaja promised to ensure that citizens are able to go to sleep and wake up around 2:00am to go about their businesses without fear of bandits.
‘We will bring stability to Birnin Gwari, Dansadau and neighbouring communities where bandits may flee to, because we if we do that, we prevent them from spreading to other areas’, the national daily quoted him as saying.
The statement by the army chief is one of assurance for the people in the various communities affected. However, it presents an opportunity for accountability.
Recently, residents of Kaduna State’s Birnin Gwari raised the alarm about the area’s escalating level of insecurity.
Also, some residents of rural communities in Zamfara State still live between hope and fear as insecurity has rendered thousands homeless.
The unpredictability of the bandits’ operations in various Zamfara communities has made them live in constant fear.
The increasing number of attacks in Niger State not only fuels discomfort in many rural areas but also prevents people from accessing farms, schools, and other legal means of livelihood.
Security concerns continue to grow as the days go by. What is needed is immediate action from security agencies.
Development Diaries calls on the army chief to back up his words with action and ensure that residents of the aforementioned states and other states can actually walk around without fear.
