World Health Organisation (WHO) is seeking to fill the role of Editor.

The primary role of WHO is to direct and coordinate international health within the United Nations system.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the peer review processes and editorial aspects of the production process from submitted manuscripts up to acceptable versions for publication in the Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal
  • Edit and proofread manuscripts and undertake research and checking of content
  • Clarify editorial and technical points with authors, reviewers and editors as appropriate, ensuring consistency of text, tables and illustrations and conformity with international standards
  • Ensure timely submission of commissioned papers, editorials and reports
  • Collaborate with suitable editors in processing French and Arabic manuscripts and translation of abstracts and titles between the three working languages (English, French and Arabic) of the journal
  • Prepare the provisional list of content for each of the 12 annual issues of the journal and the occasional thematic issues or similar products
  • Undertake the technical part of the production process, particularly ensuring consistency of the layout and content
  • Allocate work to freelance editors, as and when required, supervise and revise their work and advise them on journal style
  • Oversee the maintenance and development of the EMHJ intranet and internet sites, ensuring timely uploading of issues to the web
  • Undertake other functions related to the journal as required by coordinator/RAI or director/SID

Requirements

  • University degree in Health Sciences (Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, or a related field)
  • University degree in Medicine or master’s degree in Health Sciences or Health/Medical Journalism (desirable)
  • Five years, minimum, of experience reviewing scholarly journals or editing health-related work
  • Three years, minimum, of experience carrying out technical editing and managing health-related journals at national or international level (desirable)
  • Expert knowledge of medical terminology, scientific language and editorial processes
  • Expert knowledge of English
  • Intermediate knowledge of French and Arabic (desirable)
