The United Nations (UN) is seeking applications from eligible applicants for the post of Human Rights Officer.
The UN is an intergovernmental organisation that aims to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, achieve international cooperation, and be a centre for harmonising the actions of nations.
Responsibilities
- Plan and coordinate activities related to thematic and country mandates on human rights, including from a gender perspective
- Define work plan for area assigned in accordance with established terms of reference
- Conduct field monitoring and verification work through regular visits
- Follow up on different cases and situations in region of assignment
- Conduct substantive research and analysis of human rights issues/events and assess impact on the human rights situation in assigned region or country
- Work with a variety of human rights actors, including civil society organisations, institutions of national governments and UN agencies in advancing human in the country
- Collect and analyse human rights data and indicators in country/region of assignment, including gender-specific data and indicators
- Establish and maintain contact with national authorities, armed groups, civil society, UN agencies, funds, and programmes with complementary mandates, and other relevant partners
- Ensure human rights issues, including gender equality dimension considerations, are integrated into political, humanitarian, and economic efforts and programmes
- Work with other components of the UN peace operation, including the police and military, to integrate human rights considerations into the planning and review of programmes and operations, including through developing procedures and policies, as appropriate
- Contribute to a variety of reports, communications, briefings, statements, etc
- Contribute to the integration of human rights in humanitarian action through participating in emergency preparedness and response activities
- Design, deliver, coordinate, and evaluate human rights training programmes for national officials, armed groups, civil society representatives, human rights non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other national stakeholders
- Assist in the coordination and implementation of the human rights work plan
- Evaluate or assist in the evaluation of progress and suggest adjustments, as needed
- Represent the field office at working level meetings
- Perform other related duties, as required
Requirements
- Advanced university degree in Law, Human Rights, Political Science, International Relations, Social Sciences or a related area
- First university degree with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree
- Five years, minimum, of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law or a related area
- Experience working in an international organisation or NGO in a conflict or post-conflict setting
- Two year, minimum, of experience in human rights monitoring, reporting and analysing and experience in conducting complex human rights investigations
- Field experience working on sexual violence in a conflict or post-conflict setting (desirable)
- Experience in developing profiles of individuals involved in human rights violations (desirable)
- Experience in the implementation of Human Rights Due Diligence Policy (desirable)
- Knowledge of South Sudan (desirable)
