The United Nations (UN) is seeking applications from eligible applicants for the post of Economic Affairs Officer.
The UN is an intergovernmental organisation that aims to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, achieve international cooperation, and be a centre for harmonising the actions of nations.
Responsibilities
- Monitor economic developments in Africa for the purpose of providing input into policy advice to member states in development planning and macroeconomics management as well as long-term structural transformation
- Design and conduct studies on selected issues in economic development through the application of quantitative and qualitative methods, including econometric and statistical analysis; macroeconomic modelling and forecasting; and draft resulting reports
- Interpret and apply results of econometric modelling
- Develop draft policy recommendations pertaining to area of work
- Formulate proposals for development strategies, policies and measures for presentation to intergovernmental bodies and others
- Attend international, regional, and national meetings
- Organise expert group meetings, seminars, etc., on development issues
- Prepare speeches and other inputs for presentations by senior staff
- Represent organisational unit at international, regional and national meetings
- Design and monitor technical cooperation projects
- Undertake missions to member states, either alone or as a participant in a diverse team, as part of the organisation’s technical cooperation activities
- Prepare global, regional, national or sector analyses that provide a basis for advising national governments on economic development issues
- Perform other related duties as required, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of the work unit’s service
Requirements
- Advanced university degree in Economics or a related field
- First degree in a relevant field with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree
- Seven years, minimum, of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, application of economic principles in development programmes or a related area
- Experience in macroeconomic policy analysis, including a track record of relevant publications (desirable)
- Proven knowledge and skills in applied quantitative economic analysis and modelling, including use of econometric packages such as STATA, SAS and EVIEWS (desirable)
- Fluency in English and French
- Knowledge of another official UN language (desirable)
