Room to Read is seeking applications from eligible applicants for the post of Literacy Director.

Founded in 2000 on the belief that world change starts with educated children, Room to Read is creating a world free from illiteracy and gender inequality.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure strong coordination and collaboration between country office literacy programme technical staff, the programme operations director and field level teams
  • Provide technical expertise to assist country and field staff with the recruitment, training, and development of literacy programme staff, and provide regular feedback on their performance
  • Identify literacy programme staff capacity-building and professional development needs and assist the human resources team with sourcing of support to address the needs and provide similar support to partner capacity-building efforts
  • Conduct the technical evaluation of consultants and other service providers for the literacy programme
  • Serve as a member of the country management team, which provides overall support and direction for the work of Room to Read in country
  • Participate in any other activities which may be required to be undertaken to fulfil the objectives of the organisation
  • Collaborate with the global and Africa region literacy programme team members in developing, refining, and adapting the global literacy programme design
  • Ensure global literacy programme guidelines and modules are implemented and adapted to the local context, as needed
  • Provide technical advice and guidance in support of literacy programme implementation and research, monitoring and evaluation
  • Visit programme sites to assess effectiveness of programme design and implementation, training, workshops, as well as for other purposes
  • Provide support to country office administrative team in purchase and procurement for literacy programming
  • Oversee the collection, documentation and sharing of effective practices from the literacy programme with country, regional and global literacy programme teams
  • In collaboration with the regional and global research, monitoring and evaluation (RM and E) team, oversee the collection and usage of programme metrics that can be analysed by (RM and E) to enhance the effectiveness of the literacy programme

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in International Education, Development Studies, Applied Linguistics, Literacy and Language, Education, or Early Childhood Development
  • Ten years, minimum, of work experience in a field focused on primary education, with three years, minimum, in a senior management capacity
  • Substantial, relevant work experience in education programmes
  • Experience in working within literacy programmes
  • Demonstrated leadership in programme planning and design
  • Strong materials development or publishing skills
  • Strong coaching, mentoring and training skills
  • A proven ability to establish effective work relationships and partnerships with diverse stakeholders, including donors
  • Experience in working with NGOs/a good understanding of the development sector landscape
  • Effective English communication skills (oral and written) and capability to relate and interact with multicultural teams and represent the organisation in professional forums
  • Willingness to work with strict deadlines
  • Ability to travel frequently, occasionally on short notice, and, when required, for extended periods of time
