The African Union (AU) is seeking to fill the role of Head of the Interpretation Division.
The AU is a continental body that consists of 55 member states. It was officially launched in 2002 as a successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU).
Responsibilities
- Design and implement policies, programmes and projects to achieve the directorate’s strategic objectives
- Manage and supervise employees within the division, ensuring the timely delivery of the directorate’s goals and effective staff performance evaluation
- Design policies, strategies and programmes to contribute to the effective implementation of relevant AU policy organ’s decisions
- Ensure the delivery of the division’s annual targets in line with the directorate’s overall goals and ensure robust and timely monitoring and reporting
- Provide technical leadership and ensure efficient functioning of all units within the division
- Manage the work of the division and supervise direct reports to ensure their effective performance in line with the organisation’s performance management policy and system
- Engage stakeholders within member states and regional economic communities and relevant international organisations in designing and implementing strategies
- Maintain thematic partnerships in support of the mandate of the division
- Maintain regular working relations with senior stakeholders in member states and partner institutions in the execution of the division’s mandate
- Represent the organisation and communicate its position at conferences
- Contribute to the preparation of periodic financial and budget execution reports and monitor budget execution at division level
- Ensure the effective management of funds contributed to the organisation
- Manage risk within the division and recommend mitigation strategies
- Contribute to the development of the departmental business continuity plan and ensure implementation at division level
- Maintain a positive work environment that facilitates collaboration and information sharing and is conducive to attracting, retaining, and motivating diverse talent
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Conference Interpretation/Translation or a language-related field
- 12 years of progressive responsible experience in interpretation, with seven years at managerial level and five years at supervisory level in similar international organisations
- Experience in facilitating intergovernmental conference processes and multicultural diplomacy will be a plus
- Knowledge of interpretation equipment/platforms/software
- Ability to initiate and promote collaborative approaches between geographically and culturally disparate partners
- Ability to establish and maintain effective partnerships and working relations
- Ability to develop and delegate clear programme goals, plans and actions, including budgets, that are consistent with agreed strategies
- Ability to effectively lead, supervise, mentor, develop and evaluate staff
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to work under pressure and in a multicultural environment
- Strong organisational, managerial and leadership qualities
- Proficiency in Arabic, English, French, Portuguese or Spanish and another AU working language will be a plus
