The appointment of the Executive Director of the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD), David Anyaele, as the Chairman of the Abia State Disability Commission is a commendable move by the state governor, Alex Otti, and one that comes with expectations.
Development Diaries reports that Anyaele, in a recent Facebook post, announced that he was inaugurated as the Chairman of the Abia State Commission for the Welfare of People Living with Disabilities by Governor Otti.
It is understood that the commission is charged with the responsibility of promoting the welfare, inclusion, participation and the general well-being of Abians with disabilities and their families.
Anyaele, a renowned advocate for disability rights, is expected to bring his wealth of experience and dedication to this critical role, working tirelessly to ensure that the voices of people with disabilities are heard and their needs are addressed comprehensively.
As chairman, Anyaele is also tasked with the responsibility of implementing policies and initiatives that promote accessibility and equal opportunities for all people with disabilities in the state.
We expect him to advocate for the enforcement of disability-friendly infrastructure in public and private spaces, ensuring that transportation, education, and health care services are accessible to persons with disabilities.
One of his primary responsibilities will be to ensure the enforcement of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities law in the state.
Additionally, we expect him to collaborate with critical stakeholders, including government agencies, non-governmental organisations, and the private sector to foster an environment that supports the social and economic inclusion of people with disabilities.
Furthermore, as chairman, we expect Anyaele to establish and maintain a transparent and accountable commission. This includes setting up a robust monitoring and evaluation system to track the progress of various disability programmes and initiatives.
He will need to ensure that the commission operates with integrity, and that resources are allocated efficiently and effectively to benefit the people with special needs.
Development Diaries calls on Anyaele to leverage this opportunity to build a strong team within the commission, foster partnerships with relevant stakeholders, and create a sustainable framework that will continue to support and empower people with disabilities in Abia State for years to come.
